Unique Page Title

Page titles for all the modules are the same.

  • 2.4.2 Page Titled (Level A) The web page has a descriptive and informative page title.

Example of Standard in Action

The title of each Web page should:

  • Identify the subject of the Web page
  • Make sense when read out of context or in a site map or list of search results
  • Be short:
    • Example: Week 1, Reading Assignments

It may also be helpful for the title to:

  • Identify the site or other resource to which the Web page belongs
  • Be unique within the site or other resource to which the Web page belongs.
    • Example: SOC 101, Week 1, Reading Assignments

Example of Issue

Screen readers announce the page title when first loading a web page. If the titles of all the pages are the same, the user will be unable to distinguish between the different pages. Web authoring and course management tools often provide default titles for new pages such as:

  • “Enter the title of your HTML document here,”
  • “Untitled Document”
  • “No Title”
  • “Untitled Page”
  • “New Page 1”

These titles need to be initialized to identify the specific function of the page.

Locating the Issue in Your Course

You will want to read the title for each page in your course and determine if the title is unique and meaningful for all students taking the course.

Resources to Align With Standard

  • The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community that develops open standards to ensure the long-term growth of the Web. The social value of the Web is that it enables human communication, commerce, and opportunities to share knowledge. One of W3C’s primary goals is to make these benefits available to all people, whatever their hardware, software, network infrastructure, native language, culture, geographical location, or physical or mental ability.
  • The Accessibility and Usability website at Pennsylvania State University explains how to ensure Web pages and online documents can be made accessible for users with different disabilities.
