Online Tutoring

Tutoring relies on hearing/voice communication; alternative access plan needed for students with hearing or speech disabilities. Tutoring application only relies on hearing/voice communication. Users who have hearing or speech disabilities are not able to access and use the program.


Example of Issue

A student with a hearing disability who needs help with their math class is unable to benefit from the online tutoring service available. The tutoring services can only be used if the student does not have speech or hearing disabilities.

Standard

Section 508 Compliance: 1194.31 Functional performance criteria.

  • (c) At least one mode of operation and information retrieval that does not require user hearing shall be provided, or support for assistive technology used by people who are deaf or hard of hearing shall be provided.
  • (d) Where audio information is important for the use of a product, at least one mode of operation and information retrieval shall be provided in an enhanced auditory fashion, or support for assistive hearing devices shall be provided.
  • (e) At least one mode of operation and information retrieval that does not require user speech shall be provided, or support for assistive technology used by people with disabilities shall be provided.

Example of Standard in Action

A student who needs math online tutoring and has hearing/speech impairment is able to use the program without any problems. The program has captions and transcripts for all multimedia content, assistive listening devices to help amplify sounds, speech amplifiers and alerting devices that helps them know when an event is taking place.
