External Application, Smarthinking

Cannot evaluate; institution should perform due diligence to ensure accessibility of product and content. Software applications that require institutional logins cannot be evaluated for accessibility. Institution needs to evaluate any program used for online coursework to be usable by people with disabilities.

Example of Standard in Action

Instructor is using an online tutoring platform. The instructor and institution have confirmed that materials used by the instructor are accessible by students with disabilities. Instructor also offers to provide any student with alternative formats in case they are not able to access any course materials while using the platform.

Example of Issue

An instructor is using the online application Smarthinking™.  This is a web-based online tutoring program that provides live tutoring, writing practice and writing center, and virtual tutorials.  Product is inaccessible to some students particularly those using screen readers.  An alternative access plan is needed.

Locating the Issue in Your Course

You will want to look through your course for each instance where a student is asked to use the Smarthinking™ application and provide an accessible alternative.
